Rechalim

TO Hebrew TEXT

Historical background:

Rechalim was founded on kaf alef (21) of marchehvan, 5752 to Jewish count, at the place where Rachela Druck and Yitzchak Rofeh were murdered, on their way to a demonstration in Tel-Aviv. The bus in which they traveled was attacked by the murderers on the main road from Jerusalem to Shechem.

After the funeral, the women from nearby settlements gathered and reached to a determined resolution that in this place must rise a new settlement.

The beginning was hard, but after a lot of struggles it was agreed that a military base of Nachal soldiers will be set up, which will become a civil settlement in the future, and beside it will be a memorial shift of two tents and a generator.

In the course of time the memorial shift turned into a midrasha on the name of Yitzchak Rofeh, which acted to strengthen the relation between Am Israel and Eretz Israel, by arranging visits of youth and adult groups for seminars and study shabats.

About 5 years ago there was a fear that Rechelim will be evacuated after the signing on the second Oslo agreement. By joint efforts of Amana movement and the settling section of the Jewish agency, the tents were renovated in order to prepare them for families that will inhabit the place permanently.

The first family came to Rechelim on the month of Shvat, 5756 to Jewish count.
Other families began slowly to arrive in order to set up a settlement.
The primary conditions were very hard, families with small children and babies lived in tents covered with wood, and additional cabins were built.
Despite political pressures which prevented approval for setting up the settlement, we succeeded to take in 7 families in hard conditions.
The situation in the area created pressure on the security minister to approve declaration about state lands, and to give official recognition to the midrasha.

On Kislev, 5759 Rechelim was officially civilized, and insertion of caravans was finally approved.

Current situation: Today there are 16 families in Rechalim, 25 children, and several singles, in a caravans site that was built by Amana movement, the settling section of the Jewish agency, and the regional council of Shomron. A new caravan site was built this year, and 4 families currently live there. There is a residence for babies of 0-3 years old, and this year a kindergarten was founded in a temporary structure.

Currently 14 housing units are being built by the housing ministry, and are supposed to be ready in the next few months.
