No independent democracy in the world began democratically. The democracy Israelis admire most, the U.S.A., was established not by negotiation, nor by expulsion, but by genocide. The Europeans, with no previous attachment to gigantic America, continued the genocide of the American Indian for over 100 years after the signing of their Declaration of Independence.
Modern Israel, just over 50 years old, is now negotiating away most of the high ground in a very small land. This comes after fighting defensive wars and terrorism combined, after successfully absorbing millions of refugees, and after surrendering an area larger than itself (Sinai) by negotiation - all acts historically unprecedented.
Yishuv Migdalim sits on one of the hills that may or may not be up for negotiation by our government.
It is special because it overlooks the Jordan Valley and the junction of three important routes: the Hotze Shomron leading to Tel Aviv, the Alon road to Jerusalem, and the Ma'ale Efrayim road leading down to the Beka'a. The land of Migdalim was purchased, not stolen, from a son of the then Muktar of Qusra, the closest village. Relations between Migdalim and Qusra have been peaceful and prosperous for years - another special feature of our yishuv. Jews from Migdalim and Muslims from Qusra, Majdal Bani Fadel, and Duma work together almost every day, in Migdalim and out of it.
It would be absurd to surrender Migdalim, with its important location and good relations, in any negotiation.
It is equally absurd that a front page article of Yediot Aharonot suggests most residents would prefer to leave Migdalim if asked to by our government. Those who would prefer to leave, if asked, constitute about 20 percent, as any real survey would quickly prove.
I invite the reporters of Yediot and any other newspaper to return to Migdalim to speak with the majority of us here, if they are interested in the truth.
